Making a huge decision

Hey guys!

This is probably the most nervous I have ever been writing a blog post. I have dabbled in wanting to be a vegetarian for a few months now but felt it hard to make the commitment. On St. Patricks Day, 17th of March, I finally made the decision that it was the right step for me.

I guess my biggest reason for this would be the cruelty to animals. Millions of animals every year are killed all around the world in such horrible conditions and for what? For us to serve on our dinner plates? It doesn’t make much sense to me. They live out their lives in absolute misery and are then slaughtered once we deem them ready to eat. It is quite literally unbelievable.

No one can say for sure why but after doing some research, I found that humans possibly started eating meat as a way to survive. Surely humans have evolved enough to not rely on killing animals for food when we don’t need them to survive. All the fats and nutrients that we get from meat can be got from natural foods thus making the decision to eat meat much more cruel.

Now, I have only made the decision so I hope you don’t find me preaching to you all as I know vegetarians have a bad track record for that already. I thought it myself for a long time. Even watching come dine with me I used to think “Why do vegetarians even go on this? They ruin it for everybody having to make different meals”. Since then I have took such a huge step in broadening my mind on the subject. I’ve done so much research and have now done a complete 360 as they say. Choosing to not eat meat is for humane reasons among others so I can now see just how ignorant my thought process was.

Another great reason to make the decision is it’s seriously destroying our planet!

  • Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide per year
  • Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human related emissions of nitrous oxide which stays in the atmosphere for 15o years.
  • Cows produce 150 billion gallons of methane per day.
  • Animal agriculture water consumption ranges from 34-76 trillion gallons annually.

The facts are endless and can be found easily. You can find the ones above along with others here.

There are so many others reasons to choose to become a vegetarian.

  • Cruelty to animals
  • The environment
  • Your health (Acne, Gum disease, Arthritis, Food poisoning, etc.)
  • Live longer (Plant based diets help to aid this)
  • 40% less likely to develop Cancer

The list could go on and on really. The only person who knows I have made this decision so far is my boyfriend, Aaron. I’m definitely a little apprehensive to have the conversation with people once this goes out there as not everyone respects it. Certain people who won’t agree with what you’re doing will only love to tell you the bad parts and ask questions like “But where will you get your protein?” Although that one is easy! I’m not just doing it I have researched it all and know what I need to do to live healthy and get my nutrients.

I’d just like to address the actual eating too. I have already made the step of cutting out cows milk. It is one thing that genuinely disgusts me and I’ve always questioned. No other species in the entire planet consumes the milk of another species, only humans. Bit weird no? Cows milk has also been linked to so many health problems such as Autism, Schizophrenia, Diabetes, Cancer, Multiple Sclerosis and so many others. I now drink soy milk which has fewer calories, less saturated fats, less sodium and less sugar but it has just as much calcium and protein! Not only that but it tastes so much nicer. Even if you aren’t vegetarian I seriously recommend trying Soy Milk instead of Cows as the health benefits are amazing.

Things like Lasagne, Chilli Con Carne, Curry and most of your favourite dishes can be made just as nice. You aren’t cutting out all of your favourite meals you’re just swapping ingredients. Instead of chicken or beef use carrots, onions, peppers etc. It really is a delicious diet to have, everything is so much more tasty and not dominated by greasy meat.

Signing off on this blog is so hard as I could really talk a lot more about it. I’ll just stop by saying I hope you enjoyed the read and if you have any questions at all please feel free to drop me a message. If you’re considering it yourself I’d recommend reading up first and knowing what you’re getting yourself into. Being prepared is so important. I’ll be following up soon about how I plan to further my support of cruelty free living so until then I’ll leave you with this.
